Q&A with Mary!
Question
What's your favorite thing about working with the creative community in West Virginia?
Answer
I love working with the creative community and getting to know them both as a creative but also as an individual. Learning about the people that make up the network, and also being able to share many of their stories, is a great privilege.
Question
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Answer
The ability to embroider really, really fast so I can make more things.
Question
What's a fun fact about you that most people don't know?
Answer
I love astrology and have a knack for guessing people's signs.
Question
What's your favorite West Virginia place, park, or landmark?
Answer
Rhododendron Trail at Valley Falls State Park or Pendleton Point at Blackwater Falls State Park
Question
What's your preferred creative outlet? What art do you create?
Answer
I am a self-taught hand embroidery artist. Much of my work is inspired by Appalachian landscapes, flora, and fauna. I use embroidery to tell stories and explore themes of place, memory, and resilience. Each piece I create is a homage to the people and places that have shaped me.
Question
What is a creative outlet or medium you have not explored yet, but would like to?
Answer
Stone masonry and glass blowing! There is something so mesmerizing about both processes. It is also starkly different than my current creative practice, but still very tactile and I'd love to try them!
