Susan Maslowski

About Susan Maslowski

My style is reflective of the work of my teacher, Charles Counts, who apprenticed with Bauhaus potter Marguerite Wildenhain. My pieces are primarily wheel-thrown utilitarian stoneware. I decorate with colored slips and do a lot of carving on my pieces. I like to make items that are affordable that will be used. I now sell much of my work via farmers markets, so I make things like honey pots, mugs, garlic savers, etc. that fit that market.

Biography

I am a potter specializing in utilitarian wheel-thrown stoneware. I grew up in the northernmost town in WV located at the time in the pottery manufacturing center of the country. I took private painting lessons while in jr. and sr. high from one of the pottery designers (Marvin Triguba) and his wife…both Alfred Univ. grads. I have an art degree from Glenville State College, but mastered my craft by serving a 2-year NEA pottery apprenticeship with world-renowned potter, Charles Counts, in Rising Fawn, GA. I returned to WV and established my own business, Mud River Pottery in Milton, WV. I was one of the first apprentices at The Mountain State Art & Craft Fair, and I have an extensive background in heritage crafts such as white oak basketry, vegetable dying, spinning, and weaving. I am a longtime member of Southern Highland Craft Guild in both fiber and pottery. I have continued to attend workshops in various craft/art fields. I’ve won several awards for my work and have sold pieces to several celebrities.
