About Mary Hott

A 7th generation West Virginian, Mary Hott is a musician and songwriter who mines the stories and history of her native state to bring to light the injustices and the resilience that shaped who its people are today. Her 2021 album of original music, “Devil in the Hills: Coal Country Reckoning” was hailed by the Associated Press as “grim history beautifully told” while No Depression magazine included it in their “Best of 2021” Americana albums listing. She has been a featured artist on NPR’s Mountain Stage Radio Show, having made several appearances. The WV Commission on the Arts has awarded her grants to study vocal improvisation with Bobby McFerrin and bring his “Circle Singing” spontaneous group creation method back to her community. She has opened for or shared the stage with numerous fantastic musicians including the J. Geils Band, Kathy Mattea, Asleep at the Wheel, and Steve Earle. Mary is currently working on a third album of original music to be released in early 2027 and actively performs in a variety of venues.

Artist Statement

As a singer-songwriter, I use music as a way to explore and communicate the experiences, emotions, and stories that connect us as human beings. I am drawn to the beauty found in ordinary lives and the emotional truths that connect generations. Whether performing an intimate ballad or a driving roots-rock anthem, my goal is to create music that feels authentic, lived-in, and genuine.

I believe that music has the power to create meaningful connections, and my goal is to write songs that resonate deeply with listeners while remaining authentic to my own voice and perspective. Drawing inspiration from everyday life, relationships, and the world around me, I strive to craft lyrics that are both vulnerable and relatable, supported by melodies that invite reflection and emotional engagement.

My artistic process begins with storytelling. Whether a song emerges from a personal experience, an observation, or an imagined narrative, I focus on creating music that feels genuine and emotionally truthful. I strive to tell stories with honesty and compassion, allowing listeners to find their own reflections within them.

As an artist, I am continually evolving, experimenting with new sounds and influences while remaining committed to the core values of authenticity, creativity, and connection. At its heart, my music is about connection—to community, to history, and to one another.

I believe the best songs carry both a sense of place and a sense of purpose, reminding us where we’ve come from while helping us navigate where we’re going. Through every performance and every song, I hope to create a space where stories are shared, voices are heard, and common ground can be found.
