About Shane Moats

What inspires me most in my work is knowing that the pieces I create will last for years in a world that often favors throwaway items. I specialize in floral tooling, custom logos, and rugged designs, but each project is really guided by what the customer envisions for their special piece. My approach is hands-on and deeply focused on craftsmanship, ensuring that every belt, wallet, or accessory is built with care and attention to detail. I enjoy the process of transforming a simple piece of leather into something unique, functional, and lasting. My philosophy is simple: create with pride, make it personal, and design pieces that stand the test of time while reflecting the individuality of the person who will use them. Every project is an opportunity to combine artistry and durability, blending traditional techniques with modern creativity.

Biography

I create custom leather pieces ranging from full floral-designed belts and wallets with company logos to tooled leather tops for Hey Dude shoes, Bible covers, rifle slings, and just about everything in between. I’m from Spencer, West Virginia, where I still live and work today. After graduating from Glenville State College, I was looking for a hobby and found myself drawn to leather because of its durability and timeless quality. I’ve always admired how a good belt can last for years, unlike most things that wear out quickly.

My journey into leatherwork started with curiosity and a bit of necessity — I saw custom Hey Dudes online but couldn’t afford them as a new teacher just out of college. Instead of buying, I decided to make my own. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, from wood burning and birdhouses to carving spoons, and I credit my dad, who had a background in woodworking, as a big inspiration. His pride in making things built to last shaped the way I approach my craft.

I never had formal training — just a lot of trial and error, patience, and persistence. Along the way, I’ve been inspired by masters of the craft like Al Stohlman with his classic style, Don Gonzales and his incredible floral work, and Aaron Heizer, whose tutorials taught me many of the fundamentals. My goal is simple: to make leather goods that are not only unique but also built with pride, quality, and the kind of character that lasts a lifetime.
